Designing Learning Outcomes

Clear, measurable learning outcomes are the foundation of effective assessment and teaching. In this lesson, we’ll focus on how to write outcomes that leave no room for ambiguity by choosing measurable verbs that describe exactly what students should be able to demonstrate.

To guide this process, we’ll draw on Bloom’s Taxonomy, a framework that organises cognitive skills from lower-order thinking (like remembering and understanding) through to higher-order skills (such as analysing, evaluating, and creating). By aligning your learning outcomes to Bloom’s levels, you can ensure they reflect the depth and complexity of learning you intend—and that your assessments and activities support students in getting there.

By the end of this lesson, you’ll be able to design outcomes that are clear, measurable, and appropriately challenging, giving students a transparent roadmap to success.
