Before diving into this module, take a moment to reflect on your own experience as a reader in another language. Reading is rarely about understanding every single word — it’s about making meaning, using what you know, and keeping the flow going.
To get you started, we’ve included a short quiz and two quick videos. The quiz will activate your prior knowledge and spark reflection on how you read. The videos will introduce some of the common challenges learners face and remind us why confidence, not perfection, is the key to successful reading.
This short pre-module section is designed to get you thinking like a learner, so that when we explore teaching strategies, you’ll see them through the eyes of your students.
What to do now:
As you watch the videos and think about your own experience of reading in another language, consider:
Do you always understand every word when you read? What happens when you don’t?
What strategies do you already use to guess meaning?
How do you keep going when a text feels difficult?
What makes reading in English feel different from reading in your first language?
If you were a learner, what kind of support would give you more confidence?
- Complete the short pre-module quiz (5 questions).
- Watch these two short videos
Then, when you’re ready, move on to the first section of the module.
